Community Nursing

Community nursing offers many benefits, particularly for patients. One of the main advantages is that patients often feel more comfortable at home, surrounded by familiar surroundings. This comfort can lead to better rest, which in turn supports the recovery process.

Patients also tend to feel more in control of their care and are often more engaged in their treatment and ongoing management. Receiving care at home allows many to maintain a sense of independence, this is something that is often diminished in a hospital setting.

In most cases, patients see the same nurse at each visit, with few exceptions. Those who require regular visits often build rapport and develop a trusting relationship with their nurse. This continuity allows the nurse to better monitor the patient’s condition and notice subtle changes, which might be missed if the patient were seen by multiple providers.

Hospitals also benefit from referring eligible patients to community nursing services. Early discharge of suitable patients helps free up hospital beds and resources for those in more critical need.

Community nurses provide flexible care, working weekends, public holidays, and offering after-hours visits when needed. Most services employ a range of nursing staff, including Registered Nurses (RNs), Enrolled Nurses (ENs), and Assistants in Nursing (AINs), with the assigned caregiver depending on the patient’s needs. However, the initial assessment is always conducted by a Registered Nurse to ensure the development of an appropriate treatment plan and the best possible health outcomes.
